Communication and Patient Safety (CaPS)

Course Overview

Communication is at the heart of patient harm. Seventy to eighty per cent of all harm that occurs to people within the healthcare system has a direct link to communication.

The CaPS program, run by the Queensland Health Clinical Governance Unit, is designed to address

communication skills and raise awareness of patient safety issues surrounding communication.

The program is run as three half-day modules.

Competencies

Through this course, participants:

  • develop stronger communication tools
  • learn how to function as effective team members
  • gain awareness of incident analysis
  • develop skills to manage cultural change of the issues surrounding patient safety.

Outcomes

  • The CaPS program enables participants to learn methods and skills they can incorporate in their own practice and workplaces to improve patient safety.
