General practice programmes: Advanced life support (adult)

Course Overview

GPP.ALS meets the health practitioners' need to achieve and maintain competency in adult advanced life support.

In the real world, providing advanced life support is practical and team-oriented. So this course takes a hands-on approach, minimising theoretical and didactic training and promoting team-oriented practical training.

At the core of GPP.ALS are the prerequisites to attain a certificate in adult advanced life support, and formal assessments throughout the course meet these prerequisites. This course also allows participants to gain continuing professional development (CPD) points with the relevant professional bodies.

Competencies

Participants demonstrate they can:

  • maintain situational awareness
  • prioritise care
  • identify and manage an airway emergency
  • apply mechanical ventilation appropriately
  • identify and manage a circulatory emergency
  • understand their team and team members' roles
  • understand the legal, ethical and safety issues related to care.

Outcomes

  • Participants leave the course with the prerequisites necessary to attain or maintain certification in adult advanced life support.
  • Participants also gain CPD points from the RACGP and ACRRM.
